The theme street of 40 stairs is historical and characteristic place which represents joys and sorrows of war refugees during the Korean War. The theme street expands from the Jungang-dong branch of Kookmin Bank to the 40 stairs Cultural Center and the Pal-sung Tour. If you go there, you can see some interesting bronze statues and historical things.
▷ The Present Stairs
The 40 stairs was the center of traffic and administration. Actually this stairs aren't an original thing. The original 40 stairs were changed to habitation and the present 40 stairs was created in the 1970s. Many refugees consoled their grief and missed hometowns sitting on the original stairs when the 6.25 War. One song reveals these phases of the times well.
The name of this song is "Gyeongsang-do Lady." The lyric writer of this song is Son Ro-won and the composer is Lee Jae-ho and the singer is Park Jae-hong. This song expresses refugees' feeling well and the name of the 40 stairs was used at the first on the song. The 40 stairs were widely known since this song became a hit sing in the 1950s.

At first, the 40 stairs were known only to old people, but it has become known to young people since the famous Korean movie, "Nowhere To Hide" was released in 1999. (Actor Park Joong-hoon, Ahn Sung-kee, Jang Dong-gun and actress Choi Ji-woo played in the movie.)
